Mr. John M. Scott, III, age 63 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at his home.

 

He was born November 21, 1946 in Johnson City, Tennessee the son of John M., Jr. and Mary H. Jackson.  He was married on June 10, 1972 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Brenda K. Putnam.  

 

A resident of the Jefferson City area for the past thirty-eight years, John was a 1965 graduate of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee

 

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 until 1971.               

  

John was employed with Loast and Stanley Consulting Engineers in Kingsport, Tennessee, Nuclear Fuel Service in Erwin, Tennessee, North Electric Company in Galion, Ohio.  In Jefferson City, he was employed with Capital City Telephone, United Telephone, Sprint, and Embarq until his retirement in November, 2007.

 

He was a member of the Leesburg Presbyterian Church in Leesburg, Tennessee, a member of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Community Relations Team, the Political Action Committee, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and he supported numerous other charitable organizations.

 

John enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and taking care of others.

 

Survivors: his wife of thirty-eight years, Brenda Scott; two sons, John M. Scott, IV and his wife Cindy of Monroe, North Carolina and Travers P. Scott and his wife Candace of Holts Summit, Mo.; two daughters, Janisha D. Warnert and her husband Scott of Johnson City, Tennessee and Melissa R. Hartness and her husband Tim of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Patricia A. MacLean and her husband Dr. Stuart of Indian Trail, North Carolina; one brother, James Michael Scott of Johnson City, Tennessee; Grandchildren, Jeremy Aldridge, Tristan, Melissa, and Jessica Warnert, Tyler, Kaitlyn and Krista Scott, Kaylie Morgan Hartness and Joseph Michael Hartness, and Theryn Olivia Scott;  two sisters-in-law, Glenda Putnam and Gayle Ortmeyer of Jefferson City, Mo.;  a former sister-in-law, Carol Scott of Johnson City, Tennessee; one great grandchild and three step great grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in law, Ray and Ruby Hilgert Putnam.

 

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Sunday.  
 

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2:30 PM Sunday, June 20, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with military honors following.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Hospice Compassus of Jefferson City or the American Cancer Society.

          

Funeral  arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Brenda and Family. You have our deepest hearfelt sympathy, John was a wonderful guy, Mike will miss his visits with John and I will miss that wonerful "southern" voice. I always enjoyed just listening to him talk. Peace be with you.

I only met John once but it was a memorable impression he left on me. A terrific man who will be greatly missed. To all of his family and friends I offer my deepest condolences and prayers as you go through this difficult time. Know that John is in a much better place, free of an earthy body. Scott Family ~ I am so sorry for your loss! John is with God now in a much better place with no more pain or suffering along with grandma : ). I know they are telling camping stories and prob night fishing. I know John will be greatly missed. We all had some great memories over on Darlene street!!!! If you all need anything let me know!! Cousin Brenda and family: My tears are shedding for you and yours at this great loss. But John's ordeal is over. May God's mercy be with you now. And soon, it is promised: "God shall wipe away all tears...and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither...and no more pain." Revelation 21:4.
